My mom’s been a published author since I was in elementary school. She writes short children’s stories for Highlights for Children magazine. Last week, out of the blue, my mom got a check in the mail. One of the short stories that was published years and years ago in Highlights has been purchased to be included in a statewide test given to elementary school students. I’m so thrilled for my mom. How fun to think that her short story is going to be read by thousands and thousands of students.
Back in the early ’90s, my mom told me I should be a writer. At the time, I was in college and the only writing I did was reports and essays and other homework-related items. The last thing I wanted to do was write in the little bit of spare time I had between going to school full time and working two jobs. But my mom kept telling me she knew I could do it, that I had a great imagination, and that she knew one day I’d be famous. I didn’t believe her.
Thanks, Mom. Thanks for believing in me before I believed in myself. Thanks for seeing something in me I didn’t realize was there. Thanks for being the best mom on the planet. I love you.

Congratulations to your mom! It’s nice to know the storytelling genes passed on in your family.
