Comic Con: Torchwood and Gareth

August 7th, 2008

Last year, Lisa got me hooked on Torchwood. It quickly became my favorite show on television. Since we missed the Torchwood panel at last year’s Comic Con, one of our top priorities was to make sure we attended the panel this year.

I want to apologize for the blurriness of some of these pictures. I tried, really I did, to get good photos. These are the best of the bunch.

John Barrowman, Gareth David-Lloyd and Naoko Mori

John “don’t turn off my microphone” Barrowman. For some reason the sound guy kept turning off John’s microphone during the panel. John was not amused. Not that I can blame him.

The beautiful Naoko Mori. Not only is the woman smart, sexy and funny, but she’s got a stunningly beautiful voice too. One of the highlights of the panel was when she and John did a duet from Miss Saigon. “Solo Saxophone”. All I can say is wow, I wish I’d seen them perform that together several years ago when they actually performed together in Miss Saigon.

Sweet, sweet Gareth David-Lloyd. We are completely and utterly smitten. More on our infatuation in a little bit.

The panel was on Thursday. On Friday as we walked around the vendor floor, we learned that John and Gareth were signing at a booth. Of course, Lisa and I booked it over to the booth, only to stand a few feet away and look in awe at Mr. Barrowman. Gareth wasn’t there at the time. We snapped these photos. The man sitting next to John is his father.

About an hour or so later, Lisa and I stopped by the table. John was gone, but Gareth was there. Lisa and I were on our way to a panel, so we didn’t have a lot of time, but we did take a moment to tell Gareth how much we enjoy him on Torchwood and that we’re big fans. Yes, lame conversation, we know. He was gracious and nice, and joked with me about the collection of Doctor Who toys I was carrying at the time, including a very large box with a TARDIS in it, that I’d purchased for my son. He teased me and I reciprocated, that the toys were for me to play with and that buying them for my son was only an excuse. He called it right. ;) Then Lisa and I left Gareth and began walking to the panel.

But for the rest of the night we couldn’t stop talking about Gareth. Lisa and I have met a ton of celebs over the years. I used to work in the entertainment industry but retired when my son was born. Lisa’s worked in the industry for more than ten years. So we’ve met more than our fair share. Yet Gareth had managed to put the whammy on us. Yes, we’d moved into awestruck territory.

The next day we returned to the convention, our BFF Wendy with us. We got Wendy hooked on Torchwood in June and we shared our Gareth infatuation with her. We were incredibly thankful when we showed up at the booth and Gareth was there again. John was gone for the weekend, but Gareth would be there until the end.

And so were we. Enamored the whole time. We’d spend some time walking around the vendor floor, but we always made our way back to Gareth. It was like he was our center of gravity and we couldn’t get too far away. I hope we didn’t come across completely pathetic, although we probably did. But Gareth was always…Gareth. Nice, fun, and he always had a look in his eye, a spark, something, like he knew something we didn’t.

Love that smile. We couldn’t even sneak up on him. He seemed to know we were there, whichever direction we walked up to him from.

It’s really unfortunate that this photo came out so blurry.

Our BFF Wendy enjoying her time with Gareth.

Probably our favorite picture, and moment, from Comic Con. Honestly, can you blame us?

So that wraps up Comic Con 2008 for us. This goes on record as easily being our best year yet. We’re already looking forward to 2009 and a whole new set of adventures.

LOL, Leigh. I tend to look at the guy in between Lisa and I, rather than my hair, although yeah, darn it, my hair is rockin’ it in the photo. :)
