On Friday Lisa posted the first of the two deleted scenes from Driven to Distraction she stumbled over when cleaning out some old files. I’m excited to share with you the other deleted scene, which actually takes place around the same place in the story as the scene Lisa shared.
I’m excited to share with you this deleted scene, which actually takes place around the same place in the story as the other one, but we aren’t quite sure exactly where. I love writing scenes where two best girlfriends are chatting, and I guess we got a little carried away since the scene–although fun–wasn’t necessary for the overall plot of the book. This scene could basically be taken from talks Lisa and I have shared over our past 22 years of friendship. Enjoy!
“Splinter-free,” Lynn announced. “Sit still for a couple minutes while the alcohol does its job and the reddening fades, then we’ll decide whether I should send you to the infirmary to wrap you up or if makeup can mute the discoloration.” She pushed away from the table. “I’m gonna grab some water. You want some, too?”
“Sure.” It’d help Blaina cool off a little if nothing else.
As Lynn walked away, Sam dropped down in Lynn’s abandoned seat. “You okay?”
“I’m fine.” Blaina shrugged. “It’s nothing. Didn’t even break the skin.”
“I don’t mean about that.”
The concern in Sam’s voice was almost more than Blaina could handle. Sighing, she started to run a hand through her hair, then remembered that she was wearing a wig, which made the assault on her hair impossible, and that Lynn had ordered her to sit still. Frustrated, she sighed again. “I’ll be fine. It’s going to be a long day, that’s all.”
“Do you want me to inflict severe bodily harm on the jerk?”
Blaina cracked a small smile. “Take a number. I’m first.”
Sam grinned. “You should have offered to make the fake bruise on his cheek more realistic by punching him.”
They stopped talking as Lynn returned. She handed Blaina some water and glanced at her arm.
“Do you need me to move?” Sam asked, already getting to her feet.
Lynn shook her head and snagged her kit. “Nah, I’m done here. Christie should be able to cover this up no problem. I’ll send her your way.”
“Thanks, Lynn.”
“No problem. Just keep the injuries minor and I’m happy.”
“You and me, both,” Blaina replied as Lynn walked away. Then she flipped in her seat and faced Sam, wanting to change the subject from work and ex-lovers. “So, where’s Caleb? I could use a clinging hug from the little guy today.”
“Father and son are both napping in the trailer, although I’m sure they’ll be up soon. And if not, you’ll get a hug tonight. Everything’s still on schedule to wrap before six, right?”
“Any more craziness aside, my ass will be out of here while the sun still shines. Why? What do you have planned, dear Sam? Will I need a lawyer afterward?”
“Nothing illegal.” Sam grinned. “You and I are going to relax and indulge ourselves with our long delayed girls’ night in celebration. Connor’s promised to keep the kids occupied and we are going to par-tay. I’ve got pizza, cheese doodles, tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole and ice cream with all the essential toppings.”
“Including marshmallow cream?”
Sam’s eyes widened in playful shock. “Give me more credit than that. What’s ice cream without a scoop of fluffy whipped sugar? And while we eat our body weight in junk food, we’ll have the men of the eighties to keep us company. I rented The Lost Boys, Stand By Me, Young Guns.” She counted them off on her fingers as she named them. “Enough testosterone packed in those three movies to dampen a decade’s worth of female panties.”
Blaina continued their time-honored, pre-movie-watching ritual by staking her claim. “Kiefer’s all mine tonight, babe. The vamp, the bad boy and the cowboy. Every last version of him.”
Sam stuck out her tongue. “Fine, but I get Jason Patric, Jerry O’Connell—’cause he grew up to be a serious hottie—and Lou Diamond Phillips.”
“As long as you stay away from Mr. Sutherland, I’ll leave your men alone.” The comfort of their familiar ritual made Blaina smile. They’d been having girls’ nights in since they were teens, watching these same movies, indulging the same fantasies. Life went on. She could do this. She could get over Jay. One step at a time.
“Wait a sec? Did you say you rented the movies? Sam, you own all of them. On DVD and video. Special edition and regular. Widescreen and full-screen editions. You’re like a video store all on your own.”
“Yeah, I know, but for an appropriate girls’ night in, it sounds better to say I rented them than we’ll watch movies from my collection. C’mon, get into the spirit.”
“You’re a dork.” Blaina laughed and shook her head.
“I know. But you love me anyway.”
Adam sauntered over, smiling at Sam before turning his full attention on Blaina. “You okay? We’re ready for you on set. Christie will take care of you there.”
“Yeah, let’s get this over with.”
Adam got on his radio and told Christie he was sending Blaina in as he hurried toward the door.
Blaina stood and Sam followed, enveloping her in a hug. “I love you, Blaine. Everything’s going to be okay.”
Swallowing the knot in her throat, Blaina squeezed Sam. “I’ll see you tonight,” she said with forced cheerfulness, stepping back.
“Kiefer awaits,” Sam called over her shoulder as she walked away.
Blaina’s smile lasted for all of half a second until she turned around and caught Jay watching her from a shadowed doorway. There was no emotion in his gaze, just cold, hard determination to finish the take.
Well that was fine with her. Finish the take, finish the movie and she’d be finished with Jay.
